Italian Wine Exports to China on the Rise

Category: World > Europe
The Chinese seem to have developed a taste for Italian wine.
According to recent data published by the Italian Institute for Statistics, exports of Italian wine to China grew by 80% between 2010 and 2011.
That may be a 20% slowdown from the previous year, which saw wine exports to China double between 2009 and 2010, but it’s still an impressive rate of growth.

[Giuseppe Santini, Wine Producer]:
They are very interested in our wine. The orientation of consumers around the world is moving in search of high quality products. They’re looking for companies specialized in producing high quality wines.”
Fine French wines remain a high-priced luxury good with limited mass-market appeal in China.
But “Made in Italy” wines are growing in popularity among consumers looking for quality wine at an affordable price.
Grape wine was a little-known commodity in ancient China, consumed mostly at the imperial court.
But in the China of today, wine appears to be an idea whose time has come.
